Chail is a small hamlet situated on one of the hills of the Himalayas in the state of the flamboyant Himachal Pradesh. It is about 45 k.m. from Shimla (the capital city of the state), 49 k.m. from Kandaghat, and 86 k.m. from Kalka. The average altitude of Chail is about 2250 meters above the sea level. It is a small town that is surrounded by lush greenery and thick pine and deodar forests. There goes a popular legend on how the place was founded. According to it, when Bhupinder Singh, former Maharaja of Patiala was expelled and restricted from entering Shimla, the then summer capital of British India, he was determined to establish his own summer capital. He then visited Chail and was mesmerized by the untouched and unparalleled beauty of the place. That is when he decided to make the place his summer capital. There exists an old royal palace called the Chail Palace. It was built by the Maharaja himself and was a summer retreat of his and royal family. It is still an architectural marvel and one of the luxurious ones in the region. Today, almost every single tourist visiting the town visits the palace and takes pictures of him with the palace as the background.
Another distinctive attribute of the Chail, one of the best places to visit in India, is that it is home to the world’s highest cricket ground. It was built in 1893 as the royal playground. Set in the midst of tall deodar trees, it is also a polo ground. Its altitude is about 2444 meters and today it is used as the playground of Chail Military School.
